General FAQ

This section answers some common questions about what MitID is, what it can be used for, when can users expect to get it, and more.

MitID is the next generation of NemID. It is the electronic ID (eID) you will use to verify your identity, log into your bank account, check your annual tax returns, or sign documents with Penneo.

You can use MitID for everything that you are used to using your NemID for. That can be anything from logging into your bank account, checking your tax returns, or signing documents via Penneo.

You’ll be contacted by your bank when it’s time for you to get MitID. You’ll receive a message either via your net-/mobile bank or Digital Post – and nowhere else. If you need help getting MitID, you should contact your bank. If you can’t wait to receive your new MitID, you can follow the instructions on: https://www.mitid.dk/kom-i-gang-med-mitid/

Once your bank has contacted you about getting MitID, you’ll need access to your NemID and phone and/or email. There are a few steps you’ll need to follow:

  1. Choose your preferred identification method
  2. Create a user ID
  3. Activate your personal MitID identification method

You’ll get further information regarding these steps once you’re contacted by your bank.

NemID is a safe solution today, but MitID is a more modern eID that prepares us for the digital possibilities and challenges of the future. Ultimately, MitID is meant as a more secure eID. You will be able to use MitID for everything that you have used your NemID for.

The first private users obtained MitID in October 2021. According to the plan, the transition will happen during 2021 and 2022. You will receive a message from your bank when it is your turn to get your MitID.

There are several ways of using MitID. You can use the MitID app or retrieve codes from the MitID kodeviser and/or MitID kodeoplæser. These solutions are free to get and use.

  1. MitID app: MitID is first and foremost an app for smartphones or tablets. With the MitID app you can e.g. log into your bank account or read your digital post.
  2. MitID kodeviser: MitID kodeviser is an alternative to those that do not have the possibility to use the MitID app. The MitID kodeviser is a small electronic device that shows a one-time code that is entered when using MitID. It is similar to the NemID nøgleviser which you might already know.
  3. MitID kodeoplæser: MitID kodeoplæser is an alternative to those that have bad sight or visual impairment. MitID kodelæser has a big screen, where the code is shown – or read out loud. Headphones can be connected to avoid other people from hearing the code.
  4. MitID chip: If you, in relation to your job, have a specific need for improved security or to use MitID a lot of times during a day, then you can buy a MitID chip. The chip is connected to a computer, either contactless (using NFC technology) or via USB. You approve requests by pushing a button on the chip. The chip can first be purchased once you have used MitID in another way e.g. the MitID app.

No, MitID won’t cost you anything.

  1. The MitID app is free and so are the first three MitID kodevisere and theMitID kode oplæsere. Their battery lasts approximately 10 years (at normal usage), so it is only if you lose the MitID kodeviser or the MitID kodeoplæser more times, that you can end up paying.
  2. The MitID chip is an option if, in relation to your work, you handle particularly sensitive information or use MitID multiple times during a day. The chip is connected to a computer, either contactless (using NFC technology) or via USB. You approve by pushing a button on the chip which can ease the approval process. The MitID chip has a user payment of 143,75 kr. and can be ordered at MitID.dk

MitID is a more modern eID that prepares us for the digital possibilities and challenges of the future. Some improved functionalities of MitID:

  1. The NemID keycard, which today can be copied or abused, is phased out with MitID.
  2. When you use MitID, you can see what action you are about to take – e.g. what amount you are about to transfer. If you are using the MitID app the information is also visible in the app.
  3. With MitID you will, additionally, be better protected from identity theft — as it is possible to receive a message through the MitID app, on SMS or email, if anyone tries to log in with your personal MitID from an entity that hasn’t been used before.

In the test period, selected users and employees from e.g. banks and public institutions tested the transition from NemID to MitID and the usage of MitID. The test period was carried out in three waves where more and more test persons were added for multiple testing purposes. On the basis of the test period, adjustments to the functionalities have been made before the release to everyone in Denmark from the end of 2021.

The migration period is the period where both NemID and MitID will be available. Users will be able to obtain their MitID from October 2021 and use both eIDs during the whole migration period, which is expected to run in 2021 and 2022.

According to the plan, the first users will obtain MitID from October 2021 and the shift of over 5 mio. users from NemID to MitID will continue in 2022. All users are, at the latest, expected to have MitID by 30th of June 2022.
