What are the different types of e-signatures according to eIDAS?
The eIDAS Regulation defines three types of electronic signatures, each with a different legal effect:
- Simple Electronic Signature (SES): While legally valid, SES provides the lowest level of assurance regarding the signer’s identity and the integrity of the document.
- Advanced Electronic Signature (AdES): An AdES offers a higher level of security and legal effect than a simple signature and is typically supported by a digital certificate.
- Qualified Electronic Signature (QES): A QES has the same legal effect as a handwritten signature across all EU member states and provides the highest level of legal certainty.
